Shaping Our Appalachian Region, Inc. (SOAR)

Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) is a nonprofit organization established in 2013 to support economic development in Eastern Kentucky. It focuses on addressing the challenges posed by the decline of the coal industry by promoting population retention, economic diversification, and community prosperity across 54 counties. SOAR emphasizes collaboration among local business owners, community leaders, and government representatives to create a sustainable economic future.

The organization implements various initiatives aimed at facilitating economic transition. These include workforce training programs, support for small businesses, and infrastructure development projects. SOAR leads the Eastern Kentucky Runway Recompete Plan, which provides career coaching and job referrals, and partners with local employers to enhance training opportunities. Additionally, SOAR fosters entrepreneurship through its SOAR Innovation program, helping individuals turn their ideas into viable businesses. The organization also engages in advocacy and regional coordination to promote a resilient economy, hosting events to connect stakeholders and share success stories.
