About Maynard Institute for Journalism Education
The Maynard Institute for Journalism Education (MIJE) is a nonprofit organization focused on promoting diversity in media through training and community-oriented journalism initiatives. Founded in 1976, MIJE serves as a vital resource for journalists of color and underrepresented communities, equipping them with essential skills in leadership, investigative reporting, and ethical storytelling. MIJE offers several key programs, including the Maynard 200 Fellowship, which provides mid-career journalists of color with advanced training and mentorship to help them transition into leadership roles. The Oakland Voices program trains local residents in digital storytelling and reporting on community issues. MIJE also has a rich history of professional development programs that have evolved to meet the needs of journalists over the decades. Through its training frameworks and educational resources, MIJE supports journalists and news organizations in fostering a more inclusive media landscape. Its mission is to dismantle structural racism in newsrooms and ensure that diverse voices shape the future of journalism.
