About

Gross-Wen Technologies (GWT) is a leader in sustainable wastewater treatment, founded in 2014 by Dr. Martin Gross and Dr. Zhiyou Wen at Iowa State University. Based in Slater, Iowa, the company specializes in innovative algae-based solutions, particularly its patented Revolving Algal Biofilm (RAB) system. This technology uses rotating conveyor belts that are partially submerged in wastewater, allowing sunlight to promote algae growth. The algae effectively remove nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus without the need for energy-intensive aeration or chemicals. GWT provides wastewater treatment services to municipal and industrial sectors, including food and beverage facilities. The RAB system not only treats wastewater but also generates valuable byproducts, such as fertilizers, soil amendments, bioplastics, and biofuels, supporting a circular economy. The company has successfully installed its RAB system in three commercial-scale facilities and is actively expanding its projects. With a total funding of $17.18 million from various investors, GWT continues to advance its technology and operations, contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and promoting environmental sustainability.
