ecoLocked
About
ecoLocked is a Berlin-based startup founded in 2021 that focuses on developing carbon-negative building materials using biochar carbon removal technology. The company aims to address the construction industry's significant emissions from concrete production, which account for about 8% of global CO2 emissions. By integrating biochar into construction materials, ecoLocked seeks to create permanent carbon sinks and targets a CO2 impact of 1 million tons by 2040, supporting net-zero emissions in construction by 2050. The flagship product, ecoLocked Materials® (eLM), includes biochar-based additives and admixtures for concrete. One key offering, eLM Zero, can reduce concrete's net carbon footprint by up to 100% while enhancing strength, durability, and insulation. ecoLocked promotes a circular economy by repurposing waste biomass, effectively locking carbon away in buildings. The company has raised $6.14 million in funding, opened a lab and manufacturing space near Berlin, and has validated its products commercially with industry partners.
